“TO CRAFT CLAY IS TO LOVE & RESPECT THE EARTH”
My pieces are pit-fired using wood. I incorporate color by using clay engobes (earth oxides and minerals) and various smoking processes to obtain different hues and rich black finish my work is known for.
The Chilalo Peruvian bird characterizes my work as I create bird figurines and vases formed in the shape of their nest to honor them. According to tradition, this bird is a Master Potter who builds his nest from clay using his beak and feet. It is this bird who taught my ancestors how to work with clay.
The form and style of my work reflect the duality of our lives. The smooth side represents the beauty in life, the rough textured side represents the difficult times we all face. My designs and colors are inspired by events in my life, my ancestors, the world around me, and the universe as a whole. Each piece is unique and never repeated.
Artist Statement
My artistic journey is deeply rooted in respect for nature. This respect for the land was handed down to me through my grandparents, parents, and teachers, with a common message to share my art and honor the earth. The form and style of my work reflect the duality of our lives. The smooth side represents the beauty in life while the rough, textured side represents the difficult times we all face. My designs and colors are inspired by events in my life, my ancestors, the world around me, and the universe as a whole. Each piece is unique and never repeated.
